An early traffic report from Pennsic:

Pennsic News: Paladin’s Pantry Food Drive

Paladin’s Pantry is an opportunity for the attendees of Pennsic to give back to the local Cooper’s lake communities each year. How, you ask? At the end of War you can donate your unused, non-perishable food items to families in need, just take your leftover goods to the collection points at Lusty Wench Tavern (E17), House Sable Maul Encampment (on Count Jehan’s Bounty), Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands encampment (Serengeti), or Chirurgeon’s Point. But do not let logistics stand in the way of donating your extra items to a worthy cause, if you cannot go to them then simply call 304-283-5640 and you can schedule a time for someone to come collect the items from you.

AND it is not just food items being collected, this year they also will be collecting things such as unneeded tents and sleeping bags to be donated to the homeless.

If you need more information about the program itself, you can contact Lord Morien MacBain (Stephen Vandevander) or call 304-283-5640.

Pennsic News: Missive From Their Majesties

“Greetings unto Our beloved East,

Her Majesty and I will have two processions that we invite the populace to join us for.

1) Opening Ceremonies. We will be mustering at 8AM in EK Royal to march out to opening ceremonies. Please dress in the colors of your local Barony/Shire/Etc. or join Her Majesty and I in wearing the Eastern purple and gold.
2) Field battle. I consider the field battle at Pennsic to be the single most “Scadian” thing we do. I would very much like to have as much of the Eastern host as is willing to join me in marching the army out to meet our friends and competitors. We will, once again, march from EK Royal to the battlefield. For Monday, we will muster at 8:30, to allow us time to conduct the business of Court before the business of war.

For both of these, we wish to have all the splendor of the East brought to bear. Wear your colors. Bring your banners and watch them flutter. Join us in Oriens Victoriousus

I want to thank everyone who has sewed, organized, or agreed to help Her Majesty and I make our vision come to life. We can not thank you enough for coming along on this ride with us!!

In Proud Service to the East,
Brennan Augustus and Caoilfhionn Augusta”

Greetings To All East Kingdom Webministers!

There will be a meeting at Pennsic in the EK Royal Meeting Tent on Wednesday of War Week (August 6th) from 1pm to 3pm. I would like to hold a meet and greet for those at the event and discuss the Office as it is, and the upcoming future.

Nothing too extravagant of course, but any opportunity to be able to put faces to names is well worth the time! I hope to see you there, and please spread the word for any who might already be on site and not keeping up with the Book of Faces.

War was declared today between the Kingdoms of the East and the Middle.  Pennsic War 43 is now underway.  Today’s war points included the Allied Champions battle which was won by the East, the Unbelted Champions battle which was won by the East, the Heroic Champions battle which was won by the Middle, and the Rapier Champions which ended in a tie.  The Belted Champions battle which was scheduled for today was not held. Their Royal Majesties were unable to reach an agreement to fight the belted battle.  The Middle conceded the war point.

Their Majesties of the East have bestowed awards on several members of the Eastern populace and beyond. Mistress Tyzes Sofia, called Zsof, former resident of the East Kingdom and current King’s Bardic Champion of the Middle Kingdom, was awarded the Order of the Troubadour at the East/Middle Bardic Exposition on Saturday evening. Lord Thomas of Effingham was inducted into the Order of the Golden Rapier on Monday following the Rapier Champions, becoming the 100th member of that order.

Tomorrow the armored and rapier armies will meet in the Field battles.

The rapier fighters engaged in a best of three scenario with the Middle Kingdom and allies taking all three battles.

Their Majesties knighted Ivan Valfrekr Hroereksson and Wilham de Broc on the battlefield.  Following the rapier field battle They inducted Robert Earlson and Sorcha Dochair into the Order of the Silver Rapier.

The frequent rain and thunderstorms moving through Pennsic resulted in the cancelation of the armored and rapier woods battles scheduled for yesterday due to safety concerns.  Armored bridge battles were fought in the morning instead with three points going to the East and two to the Middle.  The rapier ruins battle was scheduled to take place in the afternoon but it and the siege weapon war point were canceled due to lightning.  The rapier ruins battle will be fought at its originally scheduled time tomorrow.  The siege war point may be rescheduled to occur at the same time as the rapier ruins battle.

The Archery Champions shoot occurred today with the point going to the East.  East Kingdom court was held this evening.  Among many other items of business, Their Majesties awarded the Tyger of the East was given to Duke Gregor von Heisler.

The Philadelphia Citypaper sent a reporter to Pennsic 43.  She camped with the Barony of Bhakail, and spent the whole of war week learning and listening.  The result of her efforts is the cover story of the Citypaper this week. The article features many Easterners and is an epic portrayal of what Pennsic and the Society are all about. You can read the full article on their website.

The East took two of the three populace shoots, for 6 war points!

Pennsic 43 Archery - Castle Window shoot

Castle Window shoot

The three traditional populace archery war point shoots were adapted to this year’s safari theme. Each shoot was worth three war points. Archers could shoot each of the three shoots up to five times on their own schedules, spreading them out over the five days the range was open for war point shooting, or doing them all at once if they wished.

On the Castle Window range, archers had 30 seconds to shoot as many arrows or bolts as possible into the window about 30 yards away, for one point each, or into the monkey hanging in the window, for two points per hit.

Pennsic 43 Archery - Soldier shoot

Rhinos and Elephants

This year’s “Soldiers” were elephants and rhinoceroses. Archers could shoot six shots at their choice of target. Hits on the closest (about 15 yards) scored one point; two points for hits on the second rank of targets (about 35 yards); three points for hits on the third distance (about 45 yards); and four points for hits on the farthest distance (about 55 yards).

Pennsic 43 Archery - Clout shoot

Alligator in moat, Giraffe in castle

The center of the Clout was at the usual 100 yards, but the perimeter of the castle was square this year. Archers had six shots to send at their choice of the moat (about 50 yards away) or the castle turret. Shots landing in the moat scored one point; hits on the alligator in the moat earned two points; shots landing inside the castle were worth three points; and hits on the giraffe earned four points. The giraffe was about twelve feet tall, and proved to be a durable and well-designed  — and challenging! — target; shots high on the neck or head could be retrieved by lowering the hinged upper portion. If tales told are correct, the giraffe was herded to Pennsic fully upright, and wore its own EZ-Pass transponder!

Pennsic 43 Archery - Castle Window shoot - dead monkey!

Dead monkey!

No accurate counts exist for the numbers of archers who shot in each of the war point shoots, but over 2200 inspection stickers were issued, giving a rough estimate of the overall participation.

At the end of war point shooting on Friday, final tallies were done and the East won 6 of the 9 available war points, as follows:

Castle Window: East = 2119, Midrealm = 1670

Soldiers: East = 7062, Midrealm = 5775

Clout: East = 4806, Midrealm = 4880

Flamingos Flock to Pennsic

Prince Edward receiving a tiny pink flamingo at PennsicA flock of pink flamingos was spotted at Pennsic, particularly an unusually small variety. The flamingos seemed to have a specific affinity for Prince Edward and many bystanders were treated to the sight of the flamingos being bestowed on His Highness. The meaning of this visitation was considered by learned folks of the kingdom, and they have not been able to reach a conclusion about what the appearance of such exotic birds may or may not portend for the Kingdom. They were able to conclude that no harm is threatened by the colorful birds. If Easterners note the appearance of any flamingos at future events, they are advised that there is nothing to fear from their appearance.
